History of Tanjore Art

Tanjore paintings trace its roots back to as early as the 18th century and hence are one of the most indigenous forms of Indian art. Tanjore art is a natural extension of the adeptness and dexterity of the Tanjore craftsmen. The art is more skill oriented and it demands a lot of attention on finesse and perfection. Figures of Hindu deities are the most common theme. The characteristics of the Tanjore paintings are its brilliant color schemes, decorative jewelry with stones and cut glasses and its larger-than-life figures. Tanjore Paintings are meant to bring prosperity and peace to the home they adorn.

Today people are experimenting with birds, animals, building structures and other subjects.

What sets them apart from Indian paintings in general are the embellishments made over the basic drawings with precious and semi-precious stones as well as the relief work which gives them a three dimensional effect. The pictures are of various sizes, ranging from huge works spanning whole walls to small miniatures no longer than 6-inch square. The paintings decorate the puja rooms in residences, arcades in major hotels and lobbies in Corporate Offices. They also make nice gifts for Diwali, Weddings and other special occasions.

What is a Tanjore Painting?

The canvas is made of a layer of cloth stretched over a wooden plank. Layers of paste made from glue and limestone are molded and applied so as to create a three-dimensional effect. Trimmed with foil made of pure gold and embellished with stones or cut stones of various colours, the Tanjore paintings are true treasures!
